Student Government Association (SGA)

The governing body for all students, SGA manages a $1.2 million student activities budget, advocates for student interests to university administration, and oversees funding for all registered student organizations. Elected positions include President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, and 24 Senate seats representing each academic college and residence hall. Elections held each April. SGA meets weekly on Wednesdays at 7pm in the Student Center Ballroom. All meetings are open to the student body.

How to Join or Start an Organization

Joining is easy: attend the Student Organization Fair during Welcome Week (August) and Spring Activities Expo (January), or browse the full directory on MongooseConnect (our online engagement platform). To start a new organization, you need a minimum of 10 student members, a faculty or staff advisor, a constitution, and approval from the Office of Student Engagement. The process typically takes 2-4 weeks. New organizations receive a starter budget of $500 from SGA.

Leadership Development

Mongoose University’s Center for Student Leadership offers programs at every level. The Emerging Leaders Institute (first-year, fall semester) introduces foundational skills. The Mongoose Leadership Academy (sophomore/junior, spring) focuses on organizational management and community building. The Senior Leadership Capstone pairs students with local nonprofit boards. Additional offerings: leadership retreats, conflict resolution workshops, public speaking clinics, and the annual Mongoose Leadership Summit each November with 500+ attendees and keynote speakers.

Greek Life at Mongoose University

Mongoose University is home to 15 chapters: 8 sororities (Alpha Chi Omega, Delta Gamma, Kappa Alpha Theta, Kappa Delta, Pi Beta Phi, Sigma Kappa, Zeta Tau Alpha, Chi Omega) and 7 fraternities (Beta Theta Pi, Delta Tau Delta, Kappa Sigma, Lambda Chi Alpha, Phi Delta Theta, Sigma Chi, Sigma Nu). Greek life at MU emphasizes academics (all-Greek GPA: 3.45 vs 3.21 campus average), community service (38,000+ hours annually), and philanthropy ($275,000 raised last year). Formal recruitment takes place in September (sororities) and January (fraternities). Greek housing is available in the Greek Village, a cluster of 8 houses adjacent to the main quad. Membership dues range from $1,800-$3,200/year depending on chapter. Approximately 22% of undergraduates are affiliated with Greek organizations. The Greek Council oversees all chapters and hosts Greek Week each spring.

Cultural Organizations

Black Student Union (BSU) – 200+ members, hosts annual Heritage Gala and MLK Week programming. Latin American Student Association (LASA) – cultural celebrations, mentoring, Latinx Heritage Month events. Asian Student Alliance (ASA) – Lunar New Year Festival, Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month, cultural showcases. International Student Organization (ISO) – support network for 800+ international students from 65 countries, annual International Food Festival (largest campus event, 3,000+ attendees). Native American Student Association (NASA) – Indigenous Peoples’ Day events, storytelling circles, cultural preservation initiatives.

Identity & Advocacy Groups

PRIDE Alliance (LGBTQ+ community, 150+ members, hosts Pride Week and National Coming Out Day). Women’s Empowerment Network (mentoring, career panels, Women’s History Month programming). First-Generation Student Association (academic support, family events, scholarship workshops). Students with Disabilities Advocacy Coalition (accessibility advocacy, awareness campaigns, peer support). Veterans Student Organization (transition support, networking, Veterans Day observance).

Religious & Spiritual Life

Campus Ministry (Catholic, Protestant, and non-denominational services). Hillel (Jewish student life, Shabbat dinners, holiday celebrations). Muslim Student Association (Friday prayers, Ramadan iftar meals, educational events). Hindu Student Council, Buddhist Meditation Group, Baha’i Club. Interfaith Council coordinates cross-faith dialogue events and the annual Interfaith Week. The Reflection Center in the Student Center is available 24/7 for prayer, meditation, and quiet reflection for all faiths and traditions.

Honor societies: Phi Beta Kappa (liberal arts), Tau Beta Pi (engineering), Phi Kappa Phi (all disciplines), Beta Gamma Sigma (business), Sigma Xi (scientific research), Golden Key International.

Professional/career clubs: Pre-Law Society (mock trial team ranked top 20 nationally), Pre-Med Association (MCAT prep, hospital volunteering, physician shadowing), Society of Women Engineers (300+ members, corporate partnerships), Entrepreneurship Club (annual startup pitch competition with $10,000 prize pool), Future Educators of America (classroom observation, tutoring programs), Accounting Society (CPA exam prep, Big Four recruiting events), Computer Science Club (hackathons, coding workshops, tech company visits).

Academic competition teams: Model United Nations (multiple national conference awards), Debate Team (NPDA division), Math Competition Team, Ethics Bowl. Each academic college has its own student advisory council that provides input on curriculum and student experience.

The Mongoose Herald (weekly student newspaper, print and online, 35-member staff, winner of 12 regional journalism awards). WMGU 91.7 FM (student-run radio station, broadcasting 24/7, 50+ DJs, music, talk shows, live sports coverage of all home games). Mongoose TV (student television, weekly news broadcast, documentary projects, available on campus cable channel 12 and YouTube). The Compass (annual literary and arts magazine, accepts poetry, fiction, photography, and visual art submissions each spring). Social media ambassadors program (15 students create content for official university channels).

University Players (4 mainstage theatrical productions per year, open auditions). Concert Choir and Chamber Singers (regional and national tour schedule). Mongoose Marching Band (200+ members, performs at all home football games). Jazz Ensemble, String Quartet, Wind Symphony. Dance Company (annual spring showcase, styles include contemporary, ballet, hip-hop, tap). A cappella groups: The Mongoose Notes (mixed), Treble Makers (treble voices), Low Key (bass voices). Art exhibitions at the Morrison Gallery with rotating student and professional shows monthly.
