Your Complete Guide to Course Registration

Whether you’re registering for the first time or managing a complex senior schedule, this page walks you through everything — timelines, holds, special situations, refund schedules, and where to get help.

How Registration Works

Registration Overview icon

Registration Overview

All course registration takes place through the MyMongoose Student Portal at my.mongooseuniversity.edu under Academics > Register for Classes. The system uses a real-time, web-based interface where you can:

  • Search courses by subject, time, instructor, or keyword
  • View available seats and waitlist status
  • Add courses to your schedule
  • Drop courses
  • View your weekly schedule grid

Registration is available 24/7 once your registration window opens. You can register from any device (computer, tablet, phone). The MU Mobile App also supports registration.

Important: Before you register, you MUST meet with your academic advisor and have your registration hold (advisor hold) cleared. First-year and sophomore students have a mandatory advising hold each semester. Juniors and seniors are encouraged but not required to meet with their advisor before registering (no automatic hold, but strongly recommended).

Registration Priority icon

Registration Priority & Time Tickets

Registration opens in waves based on class standing (earned credit hours), not by when you were admitted. The priority order and approximate dates for Fall 2027 registration (opens during Spring 2027):

  • Graduate students: April 13
  • Seniors (90+ credits): April 20
  • Juniors (60–89 credits): April 21
  • Sophomores (30–59 credits): April 22
  • First-years (0–29 credits): April 23

Within each class standing, individual time tickets are assigned by a combination of credits earned and honors status. Honors Program students register 24 hours before their class standing group. Student-athletes with schedule conflicts receive priority for required courses only (not general priority).

Your specific time ticket is visible in MyMongoose under Academics > Registration Time Ticket starting 2 weeks before registration opens.

Registration for Spring 2027 (during Fall 2026): Nov 2 (seniors) through Nov 5 (first-years).
Summer 2027: March 15 (open registration, no priority waves).
Winter Session 2028: October 1 (open registration).

Step-by-Step Process icon

Step-by-Step Registration Process

Step 1: Run your Degree Audit in MyMongoose (Academics > Degree Audit) to see what requirements you still need.

Step 2: Review the Course Schedule for the upcoming semester (available in MyMongoose 4–6 weeks before registration).

Step 3: Meet with your academic advisor. Discuss your degree audit, course options, and any questions. Your advisor clears your advising hold after the meeting.

Step 4: Build a tentative schedule — use MyMongoose’s Schedule Planner tool to create multiple schedule options and check for time conflicts. Plan a primary schedule AND a backup in case sections fill up.

Step 5: Register when your time ticket opens — log in, search for courses by CRN (Course Reference Number) or subject, and add them. Confirm your schedule.

Step 6: Check your schedule the next day to confirm all courses are still showing (occasionally courses are canceled due to low enrollment).

Step 7: Attend the first day of every class. Professors may drop students who don’t attend the first class to open seats for waitlisted students.

Registration Holds — What They Are and How to Clear Them

Academic Holds icon

Academic & Advising Holds

Advising Hold: Placed automatically on all first-year and sophomore student accounts each semester. Purpose: ensure students meet with their advisor before registering. How to clear: schedule an appointment with your assigned academic advisor (find them in MyMongoose under Academics > My Advisor). After your advising meeting, your advisor lifts the hold (usually same day, allow up to 24 hours). If your advisor is unavailable, contact the Academic Advising Center at advising@mongooseuniversity.edu or (555) 478-3125.

Academic Standing Hold: Placed if your cumulative GPA falls below 2.0 (undergraduate) or 3.0 (graduate). How to clear: meet with your advisor and the Student Success Center to develop an Academic Recovery Plan. The Dean of your college must approve continued enrollment.

Incomplete Grade Hold: Placed if you have an unresolved Incomplete (I) grade from a prior semester. How to clear: complete the outstanding coursework and have your instructor submit the grade change to the Registrar, OR have the I converted to the default grade (F if no work submitted).

Financial Holds icon

Financial & Administrative Holds

Financial Hold (Balance Due): Placed if you have an unpaid balance of $200 or more. Prevents registration, transcript requests, and diploma release. How to clear: pay the balance in full at my.mongooseuniversity.edu/billing or set up a payment plan with Student Accounts (studentaccounts@mongooseuniversity.edu, (555) 478-3220). Allow 24–48 hours for the hold to be lifted after payment.

Library Hold: Placed for overdue library materials (books, equipment) or unpaid fines exceeding $25. How to clear: return items and pay fines at the Library Circulation Desk or online.

Parking Hold: Placed for unpaid parking citations exceeding $100. How to clear: pay at parking.mongooseuniversity.edu or the Campus Safety office.

Emergency Contact Hold: Placed if you haven’t updated emergency contact information for the current academic year. How to clear: update in MyMongoose under My Profile > Emergency Contacts (takes 5 minutes, hold lifted immediately).

Health Holds icon

Health & Compliance Holds

Immunization Hold: Placed if required immunization records are incomplete. Common for incoming students who miss the July 1 deadline, and for students who need booster shots. How to clear: submit updated records through the Health Portal at health.mongooseuniversity.edu. Health Center reviews within 3–5 business days. Contact health@mongooseuniversity.edu or (555) 478-3275 if urgent.

Health Insurance Hold: Placed if you haven’t either waived or enrolled in the MU Student Health Insurance Plan by August 15 (fall) or January 15 (spring). How to clear: submit your waiver (if you have other coverage) or enroll in MU-SHIP at health.mongooseuniversity.edu/insurance.

Title IX / Student Conduct Hold: Placed if you have an unresolved Title IX matter or student conduct case. How to clear: contact the Title IX Office at titleix@mongooseuniversity.edu or the Dean of Students at deanofstudents@mongooseuniversity.edu. These holds cannot be overridden.

How to check your holds: MyMongoose > Academics > Registration > View Holds. Each hold lists the type, the office responsible, and contact information for resolution.

Special Registration Situations

Course Waitlists

If a course section is full, you can add yourself to the waitlist (available for most courses). Waitlist position is shown in MyMongoose. When a seat opens, the next student on the waitlist is automatically enrolled and notified by email. You have 24 hours to confirm or you’re dropped and the seat goes to the next person. You can be on a maximum of 2 waitlists simultaneously. Waitlists are active during the priority registration period and the first week of classes. After Week 1, waitlists close and you must get instructor permission via Late Add Form.

Course Overrides / Permits

Some courses require department permission (e.g., independent study, internship credits, graduate courses taken by undergrads, courses reserved for specific majors). Request an override through MyMongoose (Academics > Request Override) — the request goes to the department chair or instructor. Allow 2–3 business days. If approved, you’ll be able to register for the course.

Overload Requests

Normal load is 12–18 credits. To take 19+ credits, you need: minimum 3.3 cumulative GPA, advisor approval, and dean’s approval. Submit Overload Request Form (available in MyMongoose under Forms) at least 2 weeks before registration. Maximum: 21 credits. Cost: standard tuition covers 12–18 credits; credits 19+ are billed at $785/credit (undergraduate).

Audit a Course

Auditing allows you to attend a class without receiving credit or a grade. Register for the course normally, then submit the Audit Request Form by the end of Week 2. Audit fee: $150/course (flat fee regardless of credits). Appears as “AU” on transcript. Cannot later convert an audit to credit. Must have instructor approval. Not eligible for financial aid.

Cross-Registration

MU participates in the Western New York Consortium, allowing students to take courses at 4 partner institutions (Lakeland University, Westfield College, Northshore State, Riverbend Community College) at no additional tuition. Requirements: full-time MU enrollment, course not offered at MU, advisor approval. Limit: 1 cross-registered course per semester. Register through the Registrar’s office by Week 1 of the semester.

Credit by Examination

AP (score of 3+), IB (Higher Level 5+), and CLEP credit awarded per the university’s transfer credit policy. Maximum 30 credits by examination. See catalog.mongooseuniversity.edu/creditbyexam for the full equivalency table. Scores must be sent directly from the testing agency to MU (College Board code 2847, IB code 001247).

Dropping, Withdrawing & Changing Your Schedule

Add/Drop Period icon

Add/Drop Period (Weeks 1–2)

During the first week of classes (Open Add/Drop), you can freely add and drop courses with no academic or financial penalty. Dropped courses do not appear on your transcript. In Week 2, you can still drop freely, but adding requires instructor permission (Late Add Form).

Important: Dropping ALL courses is not the same as dropping individual courses — if you intend to leave the university for the semester, you must formally withdraw through the Dean of Students (not just drop classes). Informally disappearing from classes without dropping or withdrawing results in F grades for all courses.

How to drop: MyMongoose > Academics > Register for Classes > select the course > click Drop. Immediate confirmation. Refund processed within 2 weeks to the original payment method.

Financial aid impact: Dropping below full-time (12 credits) may reduce your aid package. Check with Financial Aid BEFORE dropping below 12 credits. Dropping below 6 credits may trigger immediate loan repayment.

Course Withdrawal icon

Course Withdrawal (Weeks 3–10)

After the add/drop period ends, you may withdraw from individual courses through the Course Withdrawal deadline (Week 10). A grade of W (Withdrawal) is recorded on your transcript. W does NOT affect your GPA. No tuition refund for withdrawn courses.

How to withdraw: Complete the Course Withdrawal Form in MyMongoose (Academics > Forms > Course Withdrawal). Requires electronic signature — no advisor approval needed (but talking to your advisor first is strongly recommended). Withdrawal is processed within 1 business day. You will receive an email confirmation.

You cannot withdraw from your last remaining course through this process — that constitutes a full university withdrawal (see Dean of Students).

Financial aid impact: Withdrawing from courses may affect Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP). You must complete at least 67% of attempted credits each semester to maintain SAP. Example: if you attempt 15 credits and withdraw from 6, you’ve only completed 9/15 = 60%, which falls below the 67% threshold. This could jeopardize your financial aid for the following semester.

Late Withdrawal icon

Late Withdrawal & Medical Withdrawal

After the withdrawal deadline (Week 10), course withdrawal is only granted for extraordinary circumstances:

Medical Withdrawal: Required documentation includes a letter from your treating physician or therapist describing the condition and how it prevents continued enrollment. Submit to the Dean of Students (deanofstudents@mongooseuniversity.edu). If approved, W grades assigned for all courses (cannot selectively withdraw from individual courses). Tuition refund: prorated based on timing (typically 25–50% if before Week 12). Medical withdrawals for mental health reasons are handled confidentially.

Family Emergency Withdrawal: Death or serious illness of an immediate family member. Documentation required. Submit to Dean of Students.

Military Withdrawal: For students called to active duty. Full tuition refund and W grades. Submit deployment orders to the Registrar.

Retroactive Withdrawal: In rare cases, students may petition for retroactive withdrawal from a past semester. Must demonstrate that circumstances beyond their control prevented them from withdrawing at the time. Petition reviewed by the Academic Standards Committee. Deadline: within 1 calendar year of the affected semester.

Tuition Refund Schedule

Detailed refund schedule for the Fall 2026 semester (Spring follows the same pattern, adjusted for spring dates):

Timeframe Refund
Before the first day of classes 100% refund
Week 1 (Aug 25–Sept 1) 100% refund
Week 2 (Sept 2–8) 75% refund
Week 3 (Sept 9–15) 50% refund
Week 4 (Sept 16–22) 25% refund
After Week 4 (Sept 23+) No refund

Summer and Winter Session Refund Schedule (Compressed)

Timeframe Refund
Before session starts 100% refund
Day 1–2 of session 75% refund
Day 3–4 50% refund
Day 5+ No refund

Refunds are processed within 2 weeks of the drop/withdrawal date. If the original payment was by financial aid, the refund is returned to the aid source first (federal regulations require this). If you paid out of pocket, the refund goes to the original payment method or to your student account balance.

Questions: studentaccounts@mongooseuniversity.edu, (555) 478-3220.

Important — Financial Aid recipients: If you withdraw from ALL courses before completing 60% of the semester, a Return of Title IV Funds calculation is performed. This may result in you OWING money back to the university even after withdrawal. Meet with Financial Aid BEFORE withdrawing completely.

Registration for Special Populations

First-Year Students icon

New First-Year Students

You will register for your first semester during New Student Orientation (June–July). Before orientation, complete math and foreign language placement tests online (links sent in your orientation confirmation email).

During orientation, you’ll meet one-on-one with an academic advisor who will help you select courses. Typical first-semester schedule: 15–16 credits (5 courses). Required: First-Year Seminar (UNIV 101, 1 credit). Most first-years take 1–2 general education courses, 1 course in their intended major (or an exploratory course), and electives.

If you have AP/IB/CLEP credit, bring your score reports — your advisor can factor them into your plan.

Waitlisted courses: Your advisor can often help during orientation with overrides for full sections. After orientation, check your schedule again in late July — some sections may be adjusted.

For Spring incoming students: registration occurs during the spring orientation session in early January.

Transfer Students icon

Transfer Students

Transfer students register during orientation (June–July for fall, January for spring), similar to first-years. Before orientation, submit all college transcripts. Your transfer credit evaluation will be completed before your orientation date (allow 2–3 weeks after transcript receipt).

Review your transfer credit evaluation in MyMongoose under Academics > Transfer Credit. If you believe a course was not transferred correctly, bring documentation (syllabus, course description) to your advising appointment.

Transfer students with 60+ credits register with junior standing (better time ticket). Maximum 75 transfer credits accepted. Courses with D grades do not transfer. Only courses from regionally accredited institutions are accepted.

Residency requirement: Transfer students must complete at least 30 credits at MU, and at least 15 of their final 30 credits must be at MU.

Graduate Students icon

Graduate Students

Graduate students register through the same MyMongoose system. Registration opens before undergraduates (April 13 for fall, late October for spring). Most graduate programs have specific course sequences — consult your program handbook and graduate advisor.

Credit loads: Full-time: 9+ credits/semester. Half-time: 5–8 credits. Maximum: 12 credits (15 with advisor and graduate dean approval). Assistantship holders must be enrolled at least 9 credits.

Thesis/Dissertation credits (GRAD 699/799): Register for 1–6 credits per semester while actively working on thesis/dissertation. Continuous enrollment required — graduate students must register every fall and spring (summer optional unless on assistantship).

Leave of Absence: Petition for up to 2 semesters through the Graduate School (graduatestudies@mongooseuniversity.edu). Students who do not register and do not have an approved leave must reapply for admission.

Common Registration Questions

“I can’t find a course in the schedule.” — Check that you’re viewing the correct semester. Some courses are only offered fall or spring. Use the subject code search, not just keywords. If you still can’t find it, contact the department.

“My time ticket hasn’t appeared.” — Time tickets are visible 2 weeks before registration. If it’s within that window and you still don’t see it, contact the Registrar.

“A course I need is full.” — Join the waitlist. Attend the first class and ask the instructor about potential overrides. Check the schedule daily during add/drop — seats open frequently as students adjust their schedules.

“I have a hold I can’t clear.” — Check MyMongoose > View Holds to see which office placed it. Contact that office directly. Most holds can be cleared within 24–48 hours.

“I want to change my major.” — Submit a Change of Major form in MyMongoose or visit the Academic Advising Center. This does not require re-registration, but you should meet with an advisor in your new department to plan future courses. Processing: 3–5 business days.
