The Mongoose University Health Center and Counseling Center provide comprehensive physical and mental health services to all enrolled students. Our team of physicians, nurses, and licensed counselors is here to support your total well-being.

Campus Health Center

Primary Care Services

Primary Care Services

Walk-in and appointment-based care for illness and injury. Services: treatment for cold/flu, infections, strep/mono, allergies, sprains/strains, minor wounds. Sports physicals and pre-participation exams. Women’s health (gynecological exams, contraception counseling, STI screening and treatment). Men’s health screenings. Chronic condition management (asthma, diabetes, etc.). Referrals to specialists when needed. Lab services on-site (rapid strep, mono, flu tests, blood work, urinalysis). TB testing for international students and clinical program requirements.

Pharmacy

Pharmacy

On-campus pharmacy fills prescriptions written by Health Center providers and outside physicians. Common medications in stock (antibiotics, inhalers, EpiPens, contraceptives, mental health medications). Over-the-counter medications available (pain relievers, cold medicine, allergy medication, vitamins). Prescription transfer from home pharmacy accepted. Most insurance plans accepted; co-pays vary. Students without insurance: generic medications at discounted rates (most under $15). Flu shots available each fall ($0 with most insurance, $25 without). COVID-19 and other vaccines available seasonally. Prescription auto-refill and text notification available.

Health Insurance

Health Insurance

All full-time students are required to have health insurance. Options: remain on parent/family plan (submit waiver by August 15 at health.mongooseuniversity.edu/insurance), or enroll in the Mongoose University Student Health Insurance Plan (MU-SHIP). MU-SHIP: $2,150/year ($1,075/semester), underwritten by Aetna Student Health. Coverage includes: unlimited Health Center visits, hospitalization, emergency room, specialist visits, prescription drugs, mental health services, preventive care. Dental and vision riders available ($350/year and $150/year respectively). MU-SHIP is required for all international students. Domestic students with comparable coverage may waive by providing policy details. Waiver deadline: August 15 for fall, January 15 for spring.

Mental Health Support

Individual therapy: students receive the first 12 sessions per academic year at no cost. After 12 sessions, referral to community providers with insurance coordination. Licensed psychologists, clinical social workers, and professional counselors on staff. Specialties include anxiety, depression, adjustment to college, relationship issues, grief, identity exploration, trauma, eating concerns, and substance use. Crisis counseling available same-day during business hours.

Group therapy options: anxiety management (Tuesdays 3pm), grief and loss support (Wednesdays 2pm), mindfulness and stress reduction (Thursdays 4pm), interpersonal process group (Mondays 1pm), body image and self-esteem (Fridays 11am). All groups are confidential and free.

Psychiatric services: a staff psychiatrist is available 2 days/week for medication evaluation and management. Initial evaluation: 60 minutes. Follow-up: 30 minutes. Referral from counseling staff required.

Telehealth: virtual counseling sessions available for students who prefer remote access or are studying off-campus. Schedule through the Mongoose Wellness App or call (555) 478-3280.

Health Education & Promotion

Peer Health Educators: team of 20 trained students who lead workshops and events on topics including sexual health, alcohol and drug awareness, nutrition, sleep hygiene, and stress management. Programs delivered to residence halls, Greek chapters, student organizations, and athletic teams by request.

Annual events: Sexual Assault Awareness Month (April), Alcohol Awareness Week (October), Great American Smokeout (November), World AIDS Day (December). Mongoose Wellness Fair (September): 40+ campus and community health vendors.

Health education materials available in the Health Center lobby and online.

Nutrition & Fitness

Nutrition & Fitness

Registered dietitian: available by appointment (free, 2 sessions/semester). Topics: healthy eating on campus, weight management, sports nutrition, eating disorder recovery support, food allergies/intolerances. Body composition analysis and personalized meal planning available.

Fitness: partnership with Recreation Center for group exercise prescription. Active Minds program: weekly walk-and-talk sessions (Wednesdays 12pm, meet at Student Center). Cooking demonstrations monthly in the Student Center kitchen. Resources for students with dietary needs connected to dining services (allergen-free, kosher, halal, vegan).

Alcohol & Drug Education

Alcohol & Drug Education

Required courses: AlcoholEdu and SAPU (Sexual Assault Prevention) online courses required for all incoming students (complete by August 15).

BASICS: Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students. Confidential, non-judgmental program for students who’ve had an alcohol-related incident or want to evaluate their relationship with alcohol. 2 sessions with a trained counselor.

Tobacco cessation: free nicotine patches, gum, and counseling. Recovery support: Collegiate Recovery Community provides sober social events, study groups, and peer support for students in recovery. Weekly meetings Fridays at 4pm, Recovery Lounge in Student Center Room 118. Narcan (naloxone) training and distribution available at the Health Center.

Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT): a multidisciplinary team that assesses and responds to concerning behavior. Faculty, staff, and students can submit a BIT referral at care.mongooseuniversity.edu. The Mongoose Cares program trains faculty and staff to recognize students in distress and connect them with resources. “CARE” reports can be filed anonymously.

Immunization

Immunization Requirements

All students must submit proof of immunization before registration.

Required:

  • MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) — 2 doses or titer showing immunity
  • Meningococcal ACWY — within past 5 years
  • Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) — within past 10 years
  • Varicella (chickenpox) — 2 doses or documented history of disease
  • COVID-19 — up to date per current CDC guidelines
  • Hepatitis B series — strongly recommended, required for health science students

International students: TB screening (QuantiFERON blood test) required within 6 months of enrollment. Submit records through the Health Portal: health.mongooseuniversity.edu. Deadline: July 1 (fall), January 2 (spring). Non-compliant students will have a registration hold.

Clinical Programs

Clinical Program Requirements

Students in Nursing, Education, Social Work, Psychology practicum, and Athletic Training have additional health clearance requirements: annual flu vaccination, CPR/BLS certification (American Heart Association), criminal background check, drug screening, professional liability insurance ($15/year through university plan).

Nursing students additionally need: Hepatitis B series completion, annual TB screening, and clinical site-specific requirements. All documentation managed through CastleBranch at mongooseuniversity.castlebranch.com. Allow 4-6 weeks for processing.

Accessibility & Accommodations

Students with disabilities requiring health-related accommodations should contact Disability Services (Student Center, Room 220, disability@mongooseuniversity.edu, (555) 478-3260).

Accommodations may include: accessible medical equipment at the Health Center, ASL interpreters for appointments (48-hour advance notice), extended appointment times, sensory-friendly waiting area. Emotional Support Animal (ESA) requests are processed through Disability Services with documentation from a licensed mental health provider. Service animals are welcome in all campus facilities without prior approval. The Health Center is fully ADA-accessible with wheelchair-accessible exam rooms, adjustable exam tables, and accessible restrooms.
